Course Details

This essential speciality course transforms you from a follower to a self-sufficient diver capable of precise underwater navigation. You’ll learn to combine compass techniques with natural navigation methods, allowing you to return to that perfect coral head, locate hidden critters, or make effortless exits without exhausting surface swims.

The programme breaks down navigation into manageable skills – from estimating distances using kick cycles to interpreting subtle environmental clues like light patterns and bottom contours. Through structured practice, you’ll develop the confidence to plan and execute dives without relying on guides or chance.

Course Structure:

  • Prerequisites: SDI Open Water Diver (or equivalent)
  • Minimum Age: 18 (10-17 with parental consent)
  • Dive Requirements: 3 navigation dives with increasing complexity
  • Equipment: Bring your own compass or learn to select one

Navigation Reality:

While modern technology offers digital solutions, the course emphasises mastering analogue compass skills first – ensuring you can navigate even when electronics fail. You’ll practice in calm conditions before progressing to more challenging environments.

What You Will Learn

  • Compass Navigation: Execute square, triangle and reciprocal patterns
  • Natural Navigation: Read reef formations, sand ripples and light changes
  • Distance Estimation: Calculate using kick cycles, time and air consumption
  • Current Compensation: Adjust navigation for drift conditions
  • Dive Planning: Create navigational briefings and contingency plans

Why Navigation Skills Matter:

  • Independence: Explore sites without guide dependence
  • Safety: Always find your way back to the boat/exit
  • Wildlife Spotting: Relocate interesting marine life sightings
  • Technical Foundation: Essential for wreck/cave diving
  • Certification Pathway: Counts toward Advanced Diver Development
