Course Details

This hands-on programme transforms you into an underwater detective, teaching systematic search methods and safe object recovery skills. Whether locating lost equipment, assisting with conservation projects, or preparing for professional salvage work, you’ll learn to plan and execute search dives with military precision while managing the unique challenges of limited visibility environments.

The course combines navigation theory with practical exercises using lift bags, marker buoys and specialised rigging techniques. You’ll graduate capable of conducting organised searches in various conditions while understanding the physics and safety considerations of underwater recovery operations.

Course Essentials:

  • Prerequisites: SDI Open Water Diver (or equivalent)
  • Minimum Age: 18 (15-17 with parental consent)
  • Dive Requirements: 4 search/recovery dives with varying techniques
  • Equipment Needed: Compass, lift bags, marker buoys, cutting tools

Safety First:

While teaching effective recovery methods, the course emphasises strict weight limits (max 33kg/75lbs) and the importance of checking local laws regarding salvage rights before recovering objects.

What You Will Learn

  • Search Patterns: Execute circular, grid and current-sweep techniques
  • Advanced Navigation: Use compasses and natural references effectively
  • Lift Systems: Deploy lift bags and rigging for different weights
  • Low-Vis Protocols: Maintain team communication in murky conditions
  • Recovery Physics: Calculate buoyancy needs for various objects

Why These Skills Matter:

  • Practical Applications: Recover lost items or assist research projects
  • Emergency Preparedness: Vital for public safety diving foundations
  • Technical Foundation: Builds skills for wreck penetration courses
  • Team Diving: Enhances coordination with buddy teams
  • Certification Pathway: Counts toward Advanced Diver Development
