Course Details

This exciting course transforms how you explore underwater environments by teaching you to safely operate diver propulsion vehicles (underwater scooters). Whether covering large reef systems, keeping up with strong currents, or simply conserving energy, DPVs revolutionise your diving experience while demanding specialised skills and awareness.

The programme combines theoretical knowledge with practical training to ensure you can harness DPV technology responsibly. You’ll learn battery management, underwater navigation techniques, and emergency procedures – skills that make you both an efficient DPV pilot and a considerate buddy team member when using this powerful equipment.

Course Structure:

  • Prerequisites: SDI Open Water Diver (or equivalent), minimum age 18 (15-17 with parental consent)
  • Requirements: 2+ open water dives demonstrating DPV competence
  • Duration: Typically completed over 2 days
  • Equipment: Learn using centre’s DPVs or bring your own

Safety First:

The course emphasises conservative practices including turn-around pressure planning, entanglement avoidance, and proper ascent techniques. You’ll learn why DPVs require heightened situational awareness to prevent accidents.

What You Will Learn

  • DPV Selection: Compare different vehicle types and features
  • Battery Management: Calculate runtime and maintain power systems
  • Underwater Navigation: Pilot accurately while monitoring depth/direction
  • Buddy Procedures: Coordinate effectively with tandem riders
  • Emergency Protocols: Handle equipment failures safely

Key Benefits:

  • Extended Range: Explore larger areas with less effort
  • Current Management: Navigate strong flows comfortably
  • Accessibility: Ideal for divers with limited mobility
  • Technical Foundation: Prerequisite for cave/technical DPV use
  • Equipment Confidence: Learn proper maintenance/storage
