Course Details

This transformative programme teaches you to safely utilise enriched air nitrox (22-40% oxygen) for longer, more comfortable dives. By replacing nitrogen with additional oxygen, you’ll significantly reduce decompression risks while gaining precious extra minutes at depth – particularly valuable for reef exploration, underwater photography, or multi-dive holidays.

The course demystifies nitrox diving through practical computer-based training, covering gas analysis procedures, oxygen exposure management, and equipment considerations. You’ll learn to leverage modern dive computers for nitrox diving while understanding the very real benefits (and occasional myths) surrounding enriched air use.

Course Structure:

  • Prerequisites: SDI Open Water Diver (or equivalent), minimum age 15
  • Theory: 4-6 hours covering physics, physiology and computer use
  • Practical: 2+ open water dives demonstrating nitrox procedures
  • Equipment: Bring your nitrox-capable computer or learn to select one

The Nitrox Reality:

While nitrox objectively extends no-decompression limits, its effects on fatigue and narcosis remain debated. The course separates evidence-based benefits from diver anecdotes, empowering you to dive enriched air both safely and intelligently.

What You Will Learn

  • Gas Analysis: Test and verify nitrox mixtures accurately
  • Oxygen Management: Calculate MODs and track exposure with dive computers
  • Equipment Preparation: Configure gear for oxygen-enriched environments
  • Dive Planning: Maximise no-decompression limits safely
  • Risk Assessment: Identify and mitigate nitrox-specific hazards

Key Benefits:

  • Extended Bottom Times: 25-50% longer dives at moderate depths
  • Enhanced Safety: Reduced nitrogen loading decreases DCS risk
  • Travel Advantage: Preferred by dive operators worldwide
  • Advanced Foundation: Prerequisite for technical diving courses
  • Computer Proficiency: Master this essential diving tool
